No Copyright - Moving to CC By SA

Breaking Up With © Copyright 2017

I used to have

© 2017 Copyright Darpan Dodiya

everywhere to prevent misuse of the content I post here on this website.

Today, [5th August, 2017], I’ve decided to part ways with that licence.

Why?

There was no practical impact of the © Copyright mark. Images were still getting stolen by those pseudo travel blogs writing posts on things like “10 Reasons Why You…Blah..Blah..Blah.”

Plus, I’m supporter of the Open-source model. Time to transit to open license.

Enter CC BY-SA 4.0

Now on, all the content you see on this website is cc-wiki (aka cc-by-sa) licensed, intended to be shared and remixed. No copyrights whatsoever.

You are free to:

Share
Copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format.

Adapt
Remix, transform, and build upon the material
for any purpose, even commercially.

For non-commercial usage, I will be happy to provide you high resolution images and videos on request. Contact me here or drop me an email.

Attribution Required

The licence while being permissive, does require attribution:

Attribution — ” You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use. ”

Let me clarify about attribution. If you reuse this content, you’re required to:

  • Visually indicate that the content is from this website in some way. It doesn’t have to be obnoxious; a discreet text blurb is fine.
  • Hyperlink directly to the original source.
  • By “directly”, I mean each hyperlink must point directly to this domain in standard HTML visible even with JavaScript disabled, and not use a tinyurl or any other form of obfuscation or redirection.
  • Furthermore, the links must not be nofollowed.

ShareAlike – If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original.

More About CC BY-SA 3.0

You can find human-readable summary of the aforementioned licence at: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/

Here’s the legal version: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode

This StackOverflow post helped me to draft the attribution required part.

One note: Many of currently uploaded images bear Copyright © watermark.

I will remove the watermark in phases, whenever I get time. Nevertheless, you can go ahead and use them right away as long you adhere to the license described above.

    Hi Darpan,
This is really great decision must say as recently I have seen big news media like DB started copying work without giving attribution and I feel, we should focus more on spreading useful information rather than focusing on who is copying our work!

I am delighted to see your blog growing and wishing you all the very best buddy. Keep rocking.

      Hello Jignesh bhai,

Exactly your thoughts! We should focus more on spreading helpful information.

Out of frustration, last month I went ahead and disabled right click and copy function. Only to realize that it was negatively hampering experience for normal users, not helping to prevent misuse of content in any way.

Thanks a lot for your wishes.

Your blog was one of the things that inspired me to keep hitting publish button. Please keep sending your feedback across, it’s always welcome.
