All hill stations are located in Dangs District, near Saputara
It’s May and Summer is on the top! Yeah, and vacations too! In the old times, the Britisher officers in India weren’t able to face the heat of our ablaze sun, so they were used to take a leave of two months, April, May and go out for a vacation on one of the hill stations of India. The reason many of India’s hill stations are influenced by the British colonial.
I live in Vansda, Gujarat. Gujarat has total 3 hill stations in the Sahyadri mountain range. Fortunately for me, they all are located within 2 hours’ journey from my home. 🙂 Due to the close proximity, I normally visit the tourist places once in a year.
What is a hill station by the way?
Technically, a hill station is a town at a higher elevation than the nearby plain or valley having cooler temperature and pleasant atmosphere. A place of refuge from the summer heat.
Well, all talk and folklores aside, let’s make the list!
List 1 – Hill Stations in Gujarat
Click on hill station name for short intro, rating, photo and accommodation information.
Saputara, aka ‘abode of serpents’, is Gujarat’s best known hill station. At the height of ~1000 meters, Saputara offers a pleasant climate and panoramic view of lush green Dang forest. Perched on a plateau in the Dangs forest area in the Sahyadri range of mountains, it offers breathtaking views of the sunrise and sunset.
Saputara is the most developed and most promoted tourist destination by the Gujarat tourism department. It has all the amenities like hotels, parks, swimming pools, para gliding, restaurants, boat club, theaters, ropeways, museum, you name it for a great weekend trip.
You can go to Saputara any time during the year, the place won’t disappoint you. Though monsoon season is the best to enjoy the beauty of this place. Saputara is 170 km from Surat and 280 from Mumbai. State transport buses are also available from Bilimora.
The Wilson hill station stands in an impenetrable forest area near Dharampur in the Valsad district of Gujarat. Having an average elevation of 750m, the Wilson Hills are popular during the summer months as it enjoys a cooler and less humid climate than the surrounding area.
There is a total of six points on the Wilson Hills to get mesmerized. However, this hill station hasn’t received much of the government attention like the Saputara did. Thus, apart from getting pleasure and oxygen from the scenic views, there’s little activity you can do.
The roads up to the station are fun to drive. It’s at a distance of 25 km from Dharampur and 120 km from Surat. There’s also a restaurant. If you want to spend the night on the peak, then there’s also a tent resort for you.
Accommodation/Food/Homestay at Wilson Hills: +91 94295 64808. Prior booking is required.
A new comer to the list. The Don hill station is a scenic village located near Saputara, on the border of Gujarat – Maharashtra. Not many people know about this place.
Surrounded with lush green mountains, at the height of 1100 meters, Don hill station offers a heavenly experience. Fortunately for Don, the Dang district administration is actively involved in the tourism development projects. The best time to visit is the monsoon. I visited the place during August and the trip was a five-star experience.
Don is 50 km from Saputara and 175 km from Surat. Such are the lovely roads and the environment there that you’d remember the quote, “The path is important, destination isn’t. ” while driving.
That’s pretty much all Gujarat has for you. Let’s take a look at some hill stations near Gujarat.
List 2 – Hill Stations Near Gujarat
1. Mount Abu, Rajasthan
Mount Abu has been a popular retreat from the heat of Rajasthan and neighbouring Gujarat for centuries. It is referred to as ‘an oasis in the desert’ as its heights are home to rivers, lakes, waterfalls and evergreen forests.
The mountain forms a distinct rocky plateau 22 km long by 9 km wide. The highest peak on the mountain is Guru Shikhar at 1,722 m above sea level.
Matheran is a hill station in Karjat Tahsil and is also the smallest hill station in India. It is situated on the Western Ghats range at an elevation of around 800 m. Located around 90 km from Mumbai, and 120 km from Pune, Matheran’s proximity to many metropolitan cities makes it a popular weekend getaway for urban residents.
Matheran is an eco-sensitive region. It is Asia’s only automobile-free hill station.
Matheran is all about points. There are around 38 designated lookout points in Matheran, including the Panorama Point that provides a 360 degree view of the surrounding area and the Neral town. From this point, the view of sunset and sunrise is dramatic. To stay there, there are plenty of hotels and villas are available.
Lonavla is in Pune district in the Maharashtra. Known for its production of the hard candy Chikki, it is also a major stop on the railway line connecting Mumbai and Pune. Both the Mumbai-Pune Expressway as well as the Mumbai-Chennai highway pass through Lonavla.
Lonavla and the adjacent Khandala are twin hill stations 622 meters above sea level, in the Sahyadri ranges. Tourism peaks during the monsoon season.
Sightseeing tour of this hill station offers the breathtaking views of forts, caves, lakes, hills and several view points.

WHERE WE CAN GO IN MID-JANUARY ? HILL STATIONS OR BEACHES ?
PLEASE SUGGEST PLACE NR SURAT
Saputara Hill Station will be a good excursion if you had never been to. There are no other good hilly areas to be visited near Surat in the mid-January.
For beach, I’d suggest Tithal Beach, Valsad.
Thanks a lot for such an informative and useful blog. Could actually make a list of places to visit by going through your blog. Your writing style is also impressive. There is no such word in English which is more harmful than “Good Job”. But still a thumps up for this . Expecting a lot more .I think you should check out this aswell https://blog.xoxoday.com/weekend-getaways-from-ahmedabad/4448

Can you please suggest me the good place where 3 friends with family can enjoy. It should not over 500 kms.
Can you provide some more info? Such as, during which time are you planning to go? Which kind of places do you like?
We are planning in 1st week of June. We don’t want crowed place. We want to enjoy the property and also the weather. We have already visited saputara, abu. suggest me in june which place will be better to visit.
June in Gujarat is the start of monsoon season. So you won’t get to see much greenery around. Below are some of the places that I can think of:
– Polo Forest, Himmatnagar
– Any of the campsites in Dang
Good to see you active and helping readers with lot of useful information. To inform other readers, darpan is also so helping when one calls him. Its my personal experience. Thanks darpan.
Thanks a lot for such nice words. Appreciate it! 🙂
thanks a ton for being a guide !! you are a great help and it was so nice going thru your blog and seeing your interest. My parents live in surat and this time when i visit them in the middle of May i wish to visit a place which is cooler and less humid than surat, maybe for 2-3 days. we will have a big family of 6-7 adults and 6-7 children. do you think saputara will be a good option in terms of coolness or lonavala will be better ? thanks again. Waiting for your reply ….
Coincidentally, just two weeks back, I visited Lonavala. Even in the month of December, the place felt quite dried out.
So I believe, weighing Saputara and Lonavala, Saputara would touch the ground. Go for Saputara 🙂
thanks a ton, darpan !! we will plan for saputara in that case ….. in the meanwhile, if you can suggest a getaway from surat which is very scarcely populated and the temperature is well below what it is in surat, meaning a place which is less known but is green and has less traffic, it will be great help …. thanks in advance !
Kevdi Campsite near Mandvi could be the place you’re looking for.
thanks again and again … will keep bothering you in future 🙂
i’ve heard that Saputara is going to be hot around May 20th. Is it true ?
Not so hot, it’d be comparatively cool place. Around 25-27 degree.
which waterfall will be better in december -gira or girmall??
Gira Waterfall, Wanarchod, Waghai is better. Girmal would be deserted place by now.

Your description about Mount Abu is correct rivers, lake, evergreen forests and its wildlife. I visited Mount Abu earlier, best hill station in Rajasthan. I have done boating in Nakki Lake and view from Guru Shikhar was spectacular.
Hi I am alpa. Can you please suggest some places where pets are aloud. I stay in gujarat. We just want to go for 3 to 4 days in this diwali.
Sorry Alpa, I have no information about places where pets are allowed.
Awesome post! Presented in a descriptive manner. Apart from these beautiful hill stations, Gujarat has lot more to offer. The state is an amalgamation of rich culture, traditions and heritage which attract the large number of tourists from all over.
Yes absolutely. No wonder why Gujarat bags a lot of tourism awards. 🙂
darpan bro..u r just gonna be my travel guru man…u r doing an awsome job.
i would like to join u on your next tour.
u did all the things which i think only nowadays.. : )
Thanks Gaurav for such motivating words!
I will let you know when I am in Gujarat next time 🙂
You seems expert of these places in Gujarat. I have few questions. I am from Dubai and visiting Gujarat in August 2016. My questions are as below:
1) what is best way to reach Saputara from Ahmedabad. Are there any bus service?
2) What is best way for local sight seeing in Saputara. Will local car service available in this busy season or shall we come from Ahmedabad to Surat (by Bus) and then hire a car from Surat to Saputara including Saputara sight seeing?
3) how many days require for Saputara tourism (2 or 3 days)?
4) As August is quite busy season, i am not able to find any hotel on online portals such as makemytrip etc. Accordingly, if we reach saputara, will hotels (even local 2 star) will be available on time itself?
5) Is it possible for you to share your mobile number, so i can call and take further advise,
Hello Mr. Manish!
1. & 2.
State run bus service is available from Ahmedabad and will drop you off directly at Saputara. However, then for sightseeing, you might not get local car service. So instead come to Surat/Valsad/Bilimora via train and then hire car to Saputara.
For Saputara alone, 2 days are enough. If you wish to explore nearby places too, make it 3 days.
I doubt. On time itself, I don’t think you’ll get any place.
I’m planning to visit saputara from vadodara. I can travel to valsad and then go from there. Can you tell me if bikes are available for rent from valsad? I don’t want to hire a car.
Sorry, no knowledge about this. Would not like to give you guesses.
Bhia confuse betwen don hillstation & saputara my plan to go this weekend so which place is better can you suggest plz
Thanx in advance
Don Hill Station is not full fledged develop hill station. Apart from natural scenes and breezing atmosphere, there are no established attractions.
Whereas, Saputara is long promoted and fully developed hill station. There you have everything, boating, rope way, adventure activities…
Choice of place depends on your taste.
I am new to Gujarat and never been to any place till now.
You’ve an awesome blog! Very informative. Found so many places from here.
Out of three hill stations that you’ve mentioned,
Which one would you recommend to a first timer in Gujarat?
Welcome to Gujarat RK! 🙂
Go for Saputara Hill Station.
Saputara Monsoon Festival 2016 Edition is upcoming. You might want to schedule your travel plans in those dates.
Thanks for a prompt reply.
I live in Ahmedabad. Just now I read your post about Polo forest. Now I am confused, Polo Forest or those hill station?!
Please guide me…
I would chose hill stations over Polo Forest. As you’ll be traveling from Ahmedabad, over 350 km, do stay 1 or 2 nights at one of those hill stations. You’ll have a great time.
Any attractions near dandi for one day only??
Umm..well, there are no major attractions nearby Dandi to my knowledge.
You can visit Andheshwar Mahadev Temple, Amalsad. The place is clean and calm.
Very good list of places! Keep it up man!
Thank you! For sure! 🙂
Can u suggest a place where we can plan for 2-3 days in june 2nd week?
Thanks for your question, however it’s tough for me to suggest any specific place without context.
Where are you from and which kind of places do you like?
If you like nature and haven’t visited Saputara till date, then you can plan trip to Saputara. Please give me some context and I shall guide you to my best.
Hi darpan, which is nearest hill station near Surat?
All hill stations I’ve listed here, they are more or less closer to Surat.
With regards to distance, Wilson Hill Station, Don Hill Station and Saputara — they’re almost same.
Your suggestions are quite useful.
Can u suggest a place where we can plan a vacation in may end.
If rain showers in Dang area 3-4 times before May end, you shall plan trip to inner parts of Dang.
Some of the places you’d like to cover,
Don Hill Station
Gira Falls, Waghai
Waghai Botanical Garden
U Turn/Girmal Falls
If no sign of rain, then head over to Saputara. It won’t disappoint you in any season. Be it December end or May end. 🙂
We family of 6 person are planning to visit Saputara and nearby places in May 2016 end in our own vehicle. Our stay would be of 3 days duration at Saputara. Can u pl. suggest how to plan day wise to cover all tourist places ?
All are visiting for the first time.
I’m preparing a comprehensive blog post on how to plan Dang tour. It shall be ready within few days. Once it is published, I will send you an email.
Aalok Pankaj Shah
Hi, I am Aalok from Anand want to go to Don Hill Station now days this summer and want to know can we see water falls…and how rates are there for hotels for this seasons, Plz reply fast.
Yes, you can go to Don hill station in summer. But the atmosphere won’t be as enjoyable as its in monsoon or post monsoon.
I’d rather suggest you to go to Saputara. You’ll enjoy more there.
No, you can’t see water falling from top in this season. No waterfall is active after February March onwards.
Rates for hotels is very broad question. Sorry, can’t answer that.
I’ve replied within a day, I hope that’s fast. 🙂
I am planning a 5 day trip by car from Vadodara. Can anyone suggest a good place to hangout with friends
I live in Anand Gujarat…I want to go for outing for 2 days with family …Can u suggest a good place?

Hi Darpan! Can you tell me for one day picnic?
What about Wilson Hills its good or not for outing? What about food facilities in Wilson Hills it is available or not?
If you live in South Gujarat, you have plenty of places to plan your picnic. It depends on your interest.
Hill Stations – Current post.
Campsites – Eco Tourism Campsites in Gujarat
Waterfalls – List of Waterfalls in South Gujarat
Explore Dang – Tourism Spots in Dang District
Talking of Wilson Hills, I don’t think accommodation can be avail in this season.
Food – No proper lunch/dinner as such. There are couple of stalls run by locals on the top. They sell light snacks. (They’ll charge double or 1.5x than MRP. Rs 10 Balaji wafer may cost you Rs.15)
It’s better to pack your food. In Dharampur town, you’ll get good food.
The place will be good however. Atmosphere will be pleasant and you’ll enjoy your day for sure.
More info: Wilson Hills Dharampur

I am planning a 1day trip by car from Surat. Can anyone suggest a good place to hangout with friends?
If you’ve never been to Saputara, head on there. Saputara Hill Station has plenty of places where you can hangout (or hangover :P).
Wilson hills is it providing accomodation and suitable to travel in March?
I don’t think of accommodation. You can not stay.
It’s suitable in March. Atmosphere will be pleasant. Crowd will be less too.
Your blog is very informative for the people like us who likes to explore new and calm, beautiful places…. I am too a nature lover and like to explore such places.
Thanks a lot, it is of great help to me!!!
If you come across any new place, don’t forget to share!
Don village is Haven of the Erth
