The List of Hill Stations In, Near Gujarat

All hill stations are located in Dangs District, near Saputara

It’s May and Summer is on the top! Yeah, and vacations too! In the old times, the Britisher officers in India weren’t able to face the heat of our ablaze sun, so they were used to take a leave of two months, April, May and go out for a vacation on one of the hill stations of India. The reason many of India’s hill stations are influenced by the British colonial.

I live in Vansda, Gujarat. Gujarat has total 3 hill stations in the Sahyadri mountainย range. Fortunately for me, they all are located within 2 hours’ journey from my home. ๐Ÿ™‚ Due toย the close proximity, I normally visit the tourist places once in a year.

What is aย hill station by the way?

Technically, aย hill station is a town at a higher elevation than the nearby plain or valley having cooler temperature and pleasant atmosphere. Aย place of refuge from the summer heat.

Well, all talk and folklores aside, let’s make the list!

List 1 – Hill Stations in Gujarat

Click on hill station name for short intro, rating, photo and accommodation information.

1. Saputara

Saputara, aka โ€˜abode of serpentsโ€™, is Gujarat’s best known hill station. At the height of ~1000 meters, Saputara offers a pleasant climate and panoramic view of lush green Dang forest.ย Perched on a plateau in the Dangs forest area in the Sahyadri range of mountains, it offersย breathtaking views of the sunrise and sunset.ย

Saputara Hill Station Gujarat - List of Hill Station In, Near Gujarat

Saputaraย is the most developed and most promoted tourist destination by the Gujarat tourism department. It has all the amenities like hotels, parks, swimming pools, para gliding, restaurants, boat club, theaters, ropeways, museum, you name it for a great weekend trip.

You can go to Saputara any time during the year, the place won’t disappoint you. Though monsoonย season is the best to enjoy the beauty of this place. Saputaraย is 170 km from Surat and 280 from Mumbai. State transport buses are also availableย from Bilimora.

2. Wilson Hills, Dharampur

The Wilson hill station stands in an impenetrable forest area near Dharampur in the Valsad district of Gujarat. Having an average elevation of 750m, the Wilson Hills are popular during the summer months as it enjoys a cooler and less humid climate than the surrounding area.

Wilson Hill Station Dharampur, Gujarat - List of Hill Station In, Near Gujarat

There is a total of six points on the Wilson Hills to get mesmerized. However, this hill stationย hasn’t received much of the government attention like the Saputara did. Thus, apart from getting pleasure and oxygen from the scenic views, there’s little activity you can do.

The roads up to the station are fun to drive. It’s at a distance of 25 km from Dharampur and 120 km from Surat. There’s also a restaurant. If you want to spend the night on the peak, then there’s also a tent resort for you.

Accommodation/Food/Homestay at Wilson Hills: +91 94295 64808.ย Prior booking is required.

My rating: 3.5 / 5

3. Don Hill Station, Ahwa near Saputara

A new comer to the list. The Don hill station is a scenic village located near Saputara, on the border of Gujarat – Maharashtra. Not many people know about this place.

Don Hill Station, Gujarat - List of Hill Station In, Near Gujarat

Surrounded with lush green mountains, at the height of 1100 meters, Don hill station offers a heavenly experience. Fortunately for Don, the Dang district administration is actively involved in the tourism development projects. The best time to visit is the monsoon. I visited the place during August and the trip was a five-star experience.

Don is 50 km from Saputara and 175 km from Surat. Such are the lovely roads and the environment there that you’d remember the quote, “The path is important, destination isn’t. ” ย while driving.

More info: Don Hill Station, Gujarat

My rating: 4 / 5

There’s no accommodation facility available at Don as of now. Best option is to stay at Saputara.

Hotels in Saputara:

That’s pretty much all Gujarat has for you. Let’s takeย a look at some hill stations near Gujarat.

List 2 – Hill Stations Near Gujarat

1. Mount Abu, Rajasthan

2. Matheran, Maharashtra

Matheran is a hill station in Karjat Tahsil and is also the smallest hill station in India. It is situatedย on the Western Ghats range at an elevation of around 800 m. Located around 90 km from Mumbai, and 120 km from Pune, Matheran’s proximity to many metropolitan cities makes it a popular weekend getaway for urban residents.

Matheran Hill Station Maharashtra - List of Hill Station In, Near Gujarat

Matheran is an eco-sensitive region. It is Asia’s only automobile-free hill station.

Matheran is all about points. There are around 38 designated lookout points in Matheran, including the Panorama Point that provides a 360 degree view of the surrounding area and the Neral town. From this point, the view of sunset and sunrise is dramatic. To stay there, there are plenty of hotels and villas are available.

More info: Matheran

My rating: 5 / 5

3. Lonavla, Maharashtra

Lonavla is in Pune district in the Maharashtra. Known for its production of the hard candy Chikki, it is also a major stop on the railway line connecting Mumbai and Pune. Both the Mumbai-Pune Expressway as well as the Mumbai-Chennai highway pass through Lonavla.

Lonavala Maharashtra - List of Hill Station In, Near Gujarat

Lonavla and the adjacent Khandala are twin hill stations 622 meters above sea level, in the Sahyadri ranges.ย Tourism peaks during the monsoon season.

Sightseeing tour of this hill station offers the breathtaking views of forts, caves, lakes, hills and severalย view points.

6 hill stations are enough to beat the heat, I guess! If I missed something, leave your recommendations in the comments below.

    PLEASE SUGGEST PLACE NR SURAT

    1. Darpan Dodiya Avatar

      Hello Nayan,

Saputara Hill Station will be a good excursion if you had never been to. There are no other good hilly areas to be visited near Surat in the mid-January.

For beach, I’d suggest Tithal Beach, Valsad.

        1. Darpan Dodiya Avatar

June in Gujarat is the start of monsoon season. So you won’t get to see much greenery around. Below are some of the places that I can think of:

          – Polo Forest, Himmatnagar
          – Diu
Any of the campsites in Dang

    Dear Darpan,

thanks a ton for being a guide !! you are a great help and it was so nice going thru your blog and seeing your interest. My parents live in surat and this time when i visit them in the middle of May i wish to visit a place which is cooler and less humid than surat, maybe for 2-3 days. we will have a big family of 6-7 adults and 6-7 children. do you think saputara will be a good option in terms of coolness or lonavala will be better ? thanks again. Waiting for your reply ….

    1. Darpan Dodiya Avatar

      Hi Seema!

Coincidentally, just two weeks back, I visited Lonavala. Even in the month of December, the place felt quite dried out.

So I believe, weighing Saputara and Lonavala, Saputara would touch the ground. Go for Saputara ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hello Darpan,

You seems expert of these places in Gujarat. I have few questions. I am from Dubai and visiting Gujarat in August 2016. My questions are as below:

    1) what is best way to reach Saputara from Ahmedabad. Are there any bus service?
    2) What is best way for local sight seeing in Saputara. Will local car service available in this busy season or shall we come from Ahmedabad to Surat (by Bus) and then hire a car from Surat to Saputara including Saputara sight seeing?
    3) how many days require for Saputara tourism (2 or 3 days)?
    4) As August is quite busy season, i am not able to find any hotel on online portals such as makemytrip etc. Accordingly, if we reach saputara, will hotels (even local 2 star) will be available on time itself?
    5) Is it possible for you to share your mobile number, so i can call and take further advise,

    1. Darpan Dodiya Avatar

      Hello Mr. Manish!

      1. & 2.
State run bus service is available from Ahmedabad and will drop you off directly at Saputara. However, then for sightseeing, you might not get local car service. So instead come to Surat/Valsad/Bilimora via train and then hire car to Saputara.

      3.
For Saputara alone, 2 days are enough. If you wish to explore nearby places too, make it 3 days.

      4.
I doubt. On time itself, I don’t think you’ll get any place.

Don Hill Station is not full fledged develop hill station. Apart from natural scenes and breezing atmosphere, there are no established attractions.

Whereas, Saputara is long promoted and fully developed hill station. There you have everything, boating, rope way, adventure activities…

Choice of place depends on your taste.

If rain showers in Dang area 3-4 times before May end, you shall plan trip to inner parts of Dang.

Some of the places you’d like to cover,
      Don Hill Station
      Gira Falls, Waghai
      Waghai Botanical Garden
      Shabari Dham
      U Turn/Girmal Falls

    1. Darpan Dodiya Avatar

Yes, you can go to Don hill station in summer. But the atmosphere won’t be as enjoyable as its in monsoon or post monsoon.

I’d rather suggest you to go to Saputara. You’ll enjoy more there.

No, you can’t see water falling from top in this season. No waterfall is active after February March onwards.

Rates for hotels is very broad question. Sorry, can’t answer that.

If you live in South Gujarat, you have plenty of places to plan your picnic. It depends on your interest.

Talking of Wilson Hills, I don’t think accommodation can be avail in this season.

Food – No proper lunch/dinner as such. There are couple of stalls run by locals on the top. They sell light snacks. (They’ll charge double or 1.5x than MRP. Rs 10 Balaji wafer may cost you Rs.15)

It’s better to pack your food. In Dharampur town, you’ll get good food.

The place will be good however. Atmosphere will be pleasant and you’ll enjoy your day for sure.
